Adopted Is My Favorite Breed, By Lisa Williams

When I first started living on my own, in an off-campus apartment when I was in college, one of the first things I did was get a dog. I had been volunteering at the local shelter and I fell in love with one of the dogs there and adopted her. I had Tasha for almost 14 years and she was an absolutely great dog. Every dog I’ve had since Tasha has been adopted from one of the local shelters or rescues. At times I’ve had as many as four dogs. Right now we have two, one adopted from Berks Animal Rescue League and one from Molly’s Rescue, and they are wonderful. Dash was the inspiration for the original PeeKeeper and Tallulah (known as Tallu) is my constant companion. If you follow us on facebook, you’ve probably seen their pictures from time to time.

Both Dash and Tallu had issues when they first came home. Since I’ve mentioned that Dash was the inspiration for the original PeeKeeper, I think you can figure out what his issue was. Little did I know when I adopted him that I would end up creating and patenting a dog diaper and running a business! Tallu was very anti-social and it took patience and a lot of work before she got comfortable being around people. These days Tallu is always right in the middle of things. Tallu has been very hard to potty train and the PeeKeeper has been a lifesaver for house training purposes.

I know sometimes people hesitate to adopt from a shelter, but my experience has been great and our adopted dogs have always been an important part of our family. There are so many wonderful dogs that end up in shelters or rescue through no fault of their own. All they need is someone to give them a home and they will repay you with love and devotion (and a few wet kisses!).
